The Free Drawing School (2018-2019)

Hospitalfield House, Arbroath, Scotland.

This year-long residency at Hospitalfield Arts, Arbroath, was all about bringing members of the community together through the action of drawing. Throughout the year I held regular experimental drawing workshops for different community groups. In the historic grounds of Hospitalfield I converted a small shed into a home for the project. This provided a cosy, friendly setting where the workshops could take place.

At the end of the project I created an installation of around 1000 ‘warmup drawings’ made by all the participants of the workshops. This exhibition was part of Hospitalfeild Arts’ spring season open weekend programme, ‘ROAMING’.

After my role ended, the leadership of The Free Drawing school was handed over to artists Laura Darling for the second year and Kirsty McKeown in the final year.
